On May 20, 2026, Viva Biotech hosted a V-Experts in Conversation webinar titled “Managing Complexity in Modern Drug Discovery: A Practical Approach to Integrated Screening & Chemistry.” Moderated by Victoria Ouroutzoglou, the discussion brought together Dr. Bing Xia and Dr. Tim Dwight to examine how early discovery teams can make more disciplined decisions when target biology, assay readiness, chemical tractability, and development requirements evolve in parallel.
Drawing on practical perspectives from screening and medicinal chemistry, the conversation covered target-dependent hit identification, V-DEL-facilitated target triage, layered hit validation, and hypothesis-driven DMTA cycles. It also highlighted how integrated workflows across protein science, structural biology, screening, medicinal chemistry, AIDD/CADD, biology, and DMPK can help reduce uncertainty, prioritize resources, and support a more continuous path from target understanding to validated hits and lead optimization.
Dr. Bing Xia is an accomplished chemist with over 15 years of experience in the field of DNA Encoded Library (DEL) R&D, having earned his Ph.D. from Boston University under the mentorship of the renowned photochemist, Prof. Guilford Jones, and in collaboration with Prof. John Porco. During his time at GSK (Boston, USA), he distinguished himself as a GSK Associate Fellow and led numerous projects across various therapeutic areas including oncology, CNS, immunology, and infectious diseases/HIV. Dr. Xia's exceptional contributions to science have been recognized with multiple awards, including 3 Exceptional Science Awards, 2 Cool Chemistry Finalists, 5 Silver Awards, and 10 Bronze Awards. He was also a finalist in the GSK $5K Electroceutical Ideation Challenge and the $1 million InnoCentive. As a key organizer of prominent industry conferences, including the GSK 2019 Global Chemistry Conference and the 8th International Symposium on DNA Encoded Chemical Libraries, and as an expert reviewer for over 100 submissions to high-impact journals. His research has resulted in the publication of more than 20 articles, book chapters, and patents in esteemed journals such as Nature Communications, JACS, and the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry.
Dr. Timothy Dwight has over 12 years of experience in drug discovery. He earned a masters degree at the University of Rhode Island under Brenton Deboef, a PhD degree at UCLA under the guidance of professor Michael Jung and was a post-doctoral fellow at Northwestern University in the lab of professor Richard Silverman. Tim began his discovery career at Ariad Pharmaceuticals where he was a scientific contributor in the development of Brigatinib, an ALK-fusion and EGFR inhibitor. Later he joined Vertex pharmaceuticals and is featured on several patents related to the development of new cystic-fibrosis correctors. In 2018 he joined Silicon Therapeutics, which become Roivant Sciences, where he led chemistry efforts for the development of SNX-281, a clinical small molecule STING agonist. There he also led both chemistry and/or projects for oncology and immuno-oncology related programs. Before joining Viva, he was the founding employee and head of chemistry at Differentiated Therapeutics, where he led discovery efforts for the development of DXTX-1464, a dual CDK2 and Cyclin E degrader for the treatment of cyclin E aberrant cancers.
