Cheney is the chairman of the board, the chief executive officer and president of Viva Biotech. He has co-founded and managed a couple of successful CRO companies in China since 2003.
Cheney received his B.S. & M.S. in physical chemistry from Fudan University and a Ph.D. in structural biology from Cornell University with Dr. Steven Ealick on phosphorylases. He did post-doc research from Duke Medical Center in Dr. Lorena Beese's lab on DNA polymerase and GG transferase. Afterward, Cheney worked for Hughes Institute and a cancer center in Minnesota for 7 years before moving back to China. Cheney served as a reviewer for the NIH structure-based project review panel and a principal investigator for a DOD antiviral drug discovery grant.
Cheney worked on a number of structure-based-drug-design projects including tubulin, immunotoxin, BTK, JAK3, EGFR, SYK and reverse transcriptase of HIV etc. He has more than 50 peer-reviewed papers and 6 US patents in early drug discovery.
John has extensive experience in the financial management of enterprises. From May 2000 to December 2007, John was the CTO of Alibaba Group, the largest Asia-based internet company that was listed as the second largest IPO sale on an Internet company on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. He is one of the angel investors of Alibaba and is the founder of its U.S. branch. John brought a wealth of technical knowledge and management expertise to Alibaba from his rich working experience in Silicon Valley. Later he focused his work in the post merger integration of Alibaba and Yahoo! China.
John joined Yahoo! Inc. in April 1996 where he directed the company’s search and e-commerce technology engineering team. John was the Chief Architect of Yahoo!’s directory search and several e-commerce related platforms. Prior to Yahoo!, John was the Development Manager at Oracle’s Server Technology Group.
John was born in Shanghai, China. He studied at Shanghai Jiaotong University and received a BS degree in Computer Science with high distinction from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. John was awarded an U.S. patent for his achievement in “Semi-structured Search”.
Fengmao Hua has been a member of the board of directors since Viva was established. Mr. Hua is the managing director of BOCOM International (Asia) Limited.
Mr. Hua obtained a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in English Language & Literature from the Shanghai International Studies University, Shanghai, China. He also received a master’s degree in Business Administration from the International University of Japan, Niigata, Japan. Prior to joining BOCOM International (Asia) Limited, Mr. Hua held various positions in various investment banks. Mr. Hua was the founding partner and managing director of China Finance Strategies Limited, managing director of investment banking of CLSA Equity Capital Markets Limited, general manager of Cazenova Asia Limited, manager of ICEA Capital Limited, and associate investment banking officer of Bank of America NT&SA.
